Thin Client Technology:
Thin Client Use in Rugged Ethernets for Oil & Gas Industries.

by Parag Shah

VP of Technology Azonix Corporation Billerica, MA 01821

Introduction to Thin Clients

Thin Clients are network computers. They rely on servers for applications and processing power. Thin clients do not require high horsepower as do PCs, or large memory storage such as disk drives, and they are simpler to administer and maintain. One of the biggest advantages using Thin Clients in Oil & Gas exploration applications is the improved "reliability", since the device has fewer parts and requires lower power as compared to a PC. The thin-client architecture, however, is not stand-alone device and needs a communication back-bone to the server. However, they can perform local computational tasks and dedicated proprietary programs, interface with peripherals, and provide an operator interface workstation at which an operator can monitor and control local conditions or communicate with other nodes on the network.
